Jets supply arms to bandits in exchange for gold – Presidency
Banditry in Zamfra State is being fuelled by illicit trading by influential persons, Nigeria’s presidency has suggested.
According to the government, jets were used to supply arms to bandits and move gold illegally out of Nigeria.
The presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu told BBC Hausa in an interview that this is part of the reasons a no-fly zone was declared in Zamfara State.
“Jets are being used to pick up gold mined in some parts of Zamfara and exported.
“There is a Nigerian gold market in Dubai. The government is losing, the people of this country are losing”, he said.
Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd), Nigeria’s National Security Adviser had on Tuesday announced the ban on non-military aerial movement in Zamfara State.
He also announced a ban on all mining activities in the North-West state.
Meanwhile, the president, Muhammadu Buhari has ordered massive deployment of military assets to restore normalcy in that state which is presently facing serious banditry challenge.
